I had the window seat and was initially just planning to capture a typical window shot; however, I found I was not satisfied with what I was getting. Inspired by the philosophy that "beautiful things don't ask for attention," I believed that there was something more; that I just had to look. With no idea of what 'it' was, I spent several minutes scanning around the plane. It was during then that I saw 'it': the side profile of a boy's face through the gap, between the wall and the chair in front of me. What struck me was how the light from the window beautifully illuminated the boy's face and how the somber shadows framed him perfectly. I knew I had no time to tinker some more with settings, so in faith, I pointed my camera, ready to click the shutter -- to my horror, the boy disappeared as he leaned back into his chair. It was disheartening waiting, hoping (and praying) for him to poke his face back out again. I was determined, however, and was willing to wait as long as I could. Thankfully, he poked his face back out minutes later, and I was able to capture the elusive moment I'd been anticipating. My experience with the RX100 IV has been nothing short of surprising. How such a small, compact camera could produce such beautiful images, especially in low light, continues to astound me. The 24-70mm zeiss lens is sharp and pragmatic. The boy in "Farewell" was seated several rows in front of me, but the focal range allowed me to frame the composition easily. To be safe, I held down the shutter and let the 16fps of the Sony RX100 IV do its thing. The blazing fast frame rate assured me that I wouldn't miss the shot. The f1.8-2.8 lens, coupled with the surprisingly strong ISO capabilities and Optical Steady Shot mean that I can shoot with confidence even in low-light situations such as this ... and somehow it all fits in my pocket.
